GED/High School Equivalency Test Instruction
Provider: HACIENDA LA PUENTE ADULT EDUCATION
The school provides adult basic education, diversion programs, and vocational education for adults who live, primarily, in the East San Gabriel Valley. It also serves high school students younger than 18 who have been referred by a school counselor. There are geographic restrictions for some programs.
Basic academic services are provided through class and individualized instruction. GED and high school diploma classes, classes in English as a Second Language for people who speak any language, literacy programs and tutorial help for students in conjunction with their use of the learning lab are available.
Distance learning is available for people who are unable to attend classes because of limited transportation, childcare problems, personal issues or work schedules. Distance learning provides materials such as audio cassettes, video tapes, CD's, DVD's, reading and math materials and the California Distance Learning Project (CDLP) web site resources.
The program provides educational outreach for people who are unable to attend regular classes, including older adults, adults who have disabilities and people who do not speak English. It offers a basic education course for students who are deaf or who have hearing impairments which includes instruction in finger spelling and American sign language.
Adult vocational (career and technical) education includes aptitude testing, vocational and career counseling, classes in a wide variety of career fields and assistance with job development and placement. Training is available for health care related positions such as Nurse Assistant (CNA), Home Health Aid, Dental Assistant, LVN and Psychiatric Technician. Continuing education and refresher courses for CNAs are also offered on weekends. In addition, the program provides apprenticeships for people who wish to learn the skills necessary for careers in floor covering, work as a glazier, work as an electrician, an optical technician, work as a veterinary or pet shop technician, household appliance repair, welding, cosmetology, computer and network technician, auto mechanic, graphic arts, and smog control. Classes are also available which train people in business skills such as accounting, office machine operation, data processing, filing, typing, transcribing, and word processing.
The program also offers a variety of personal enrichment classes for adults which include recreational/leisure instruction in areas such as physical fitness; parenting education and parent/child classes; classes in arts and crafts, cake decorating, floral techniques and stained glass; and free courses for older adults which provide nutrition, health, consumer education and fine arts.
The agency also operates the Innovative Rehabilitation Services program which offers a variety of vocational rehabilitation opportunities for people in the Greater San Gabriel Valley area who have physical, emotional and/or developmental disabilities. Special training is available in independent living skills, food service, landscape gardening, building maintenance, and domestic aide skills. This program also maintains a sheltered workshop (see the site list) in which people who have all types of disabilities and who are referred by their school district or the California State Department of Rehabilitation may receive prevocational and vocational skill training and experience as they participate in an actual work situation; participants are paid for their work.
