Education Advocacy Groups

Provider: FAMILIES IN SCHOOLS

The organization provides education services for public schools and community residents in Los Angeles County. Services include customized training for employees, educational advocacy, organizational consultation/technical assistance, and outreach programs, including a program for children who have been affected by the wildfires in LA County. There are no geographic restrictions.

Customized training and technical assistance includes parent engagement training and curriculum for elementary school staff. Training focuses on teaching educators to successfully engage parents in their child's literacy development. Special programs also focus on helping educators work to prepare older students for college. A special course is also available to teach early education professionals how to deal with job-related stress.

Community outreach to increase parent involvement is also provided to parents of school-age children and community members.

The agency's Read LA Storytime is an initiative to bring storytelling to young children in preschool through third grade who have been affected by the wildfires in LA County. Trained literacy volunteers read to children in safe, welcoming spaces such as shelters, temporary housing, and community centers. Participating children also receive a backpack filled with up to four books.
