Food Assistance During the Federal Shutdown
Beginning November 1st, millions of Californians who rely on CalFresh to feed themselves and their families will not receive their regular benefits due to delays caused by the ongoing federal government shutdown. This means that individuals who use their Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards through this federally funded program will not receive additional funds until the government reopens.
The delay is expected to impact approximately 4.8 million Californians, including an estimated 1.6 million residents in Los Angeles County. This interruption poses a serious challenge for households that depend on CalFresh to maintain access to nutritious food. Without these benefits, many families may face reduced food stability and difficulty meeting their daily nutritional needs.
At 211 LA, we recognize that access to vital resources, such as food assistance, is essential for the well-being of our community. When delays occur, the consequences can be serious for individuals and families who depend on this support.
According to the CalFresh website, eligible households may receive between $298 - $1,421 per month in food assistance, depending on income and family size. Without these funds, many Angelenos face the difficult reality of not being able to provide consistent, healthy meals for themselves. The federal government shutdown poses the question for many: When will benefits once again become available?
For those new to CalFresh or in the process of renewing their benefits, it is strongly recommended to continue submitting all required forms. Ensuring that all paperwork is complete and submitted on time will help prevent additional delays. According to the California Department of Social Services (CDSS), any existing funds already loaded onto recipients’ EBT cards will remain accessible throughout the shutdown.
During this challenging time, 211 LA remains committed to supporting residents by connecting them with essential community resources. Through our 24/7 information and referral line, 211 LA helps the residents of Los Angeles find nearby food banks, meal programs, and other services.
In addition, 211 LA has compiled a list of local resources available to assist individuals and families affected by the delay in CalFresh Benefits. These resources are designed to ensure that no resident goes without the food and support they need during this challenging time.
