The department provides fire and rescue services for the City of Santa Monica. Services include fire prevention information, fire services and fire stations. Most services are restricted to Santa Monica residents and the Santa Monica business community.
The department helps residents prepare against fires and natural disasters like earthquakes. It provides advice and publications to help homeowners reduce the risk of fire and to be prepared in the event of an earthquake. When flood warnings have been issued, the department provides sand bags to protect property from flood damage; the bags are empty and must be filled by property owners.
The department's fire services include fire control and suppression and rescue. It inspects buildings and property for compliance with fire codes to reduce or eliminate fire hazards. The department enforces related laws and inspects for fire hazard abatement. The department inspects multi-family dwellings and all public buildings for compliance with state and local fire codes and ordinances and issues citations to code violators. The department also provides information on the use of fire extinguishers; installation and maintenance information for smoke detectors; and disaster preparedness and earthquake planning.
