Trash/Garbage Pickup

The Department of Public Works (DWP) provides sanitation services for residents of unincorporated Los Angeles county and portions of certain cities, through four different waste management systems. Services include illegal dumping reporting, large item trash/garbage pickup and trash/garbage pickup. Geographic restrictions apply; please see details below.  

There are seven Garbage Disposal Districts where residential and commercial services are provided by private companies contracted by DPW. The service area includes zip codes 90001, 90002, 90008, 90022, 90043, 90044, 90022, 90023, 90032, 90047, 90056, 90059, 90061, 90063, 90066, 90220, 90221, 90248, 90230, 90255, 90263, 90265 and 90304. It also includes portions of Belvedere Gardens, East L.A., East Rancho Dominguez, East Compton, City Terrace, Florence, Graham, Laderea Heights, Lennox, Malibu, View Park, Walnut Park, West Athens, West Fox Hills, Westmont, Willowbrook and Windsor Hills. 

There are 16 Residential Franchise Systems where residential services (no business services) are provided by private companies contracted with DPW. The service area includes zip codes 90061, 90220, 90248, 90249, 90250, 90261, 90262, 90263, 90265, 90601, 90604, 90605, 90606, 90631, 90650, 90660, 91001, 91006, 91010, 91011, 91016, 91020, 91301 91302, 91414, 91023, 91024, 91042, 91107, 91304, 91307, 91311, 91321, 91326, 91350, 91351, 91354, 91355, 91381, 91382, 91387, 91390, 91711, 91702, 91722, 91724, 91733, 91740, 91745, 91746, 91748, 91767, 91768, 91770, 91773, 91775, 91776, 91789, 92821, 92823 and 93550.  

Trash services for business, commercial, industrial and institutional and residential apartment or multi-family properties that use bins, dumpsters or roll-off boxes are provided by contracted private commercial waste haulers.  

Residents who do not fall under any of these systems are currently part of an Open Market Area, which will be replaced by the Residential Franchise System over the next few years. Open Market Area residents are required to set up their own trash service with a private waste company. A list of authorized companies can be found online on the DPW website or in the local phone book. The county does not have any jurisdictional authority over the haulers' service standards, management practices, hours and methods of collection, service rates, and other operational practices.
