Provider: CANCER SUPPORT COMMUNITY - VALLEY - VENTURA - SANTA BARBARA
The agency provides supportive services for adults 21 years and older, who have cancer and their families, friends and significant others, including groups for children with a parent or grandparent with cancer. Services include bereavement support groups, mentoring programs, health-related support groups and wellness-related activities. There are no geographic restrictions.
Ongoing support groups for specific types of cancer include workshops on topics such as stress management and pain control, visualization and relaxation, or nutrition and cooking. Support groups are facilitated by staff.
In addition to group meetings, the community provides various social programs which are open to anyone who has cancer and his or her significant others. Wellness and social/recreational activities are frequently offered.
A Spanish-Language program called "Aliado", which means ally, provides personal support from a volunteer to Spanish-speaking families affected by cancer. A mentoring program is also available for English-speaking cancer survivors. The program matches a person with a specific type of cancer with a volunteer who has had the same diagnosis or has had similar treatment as is being proposed.
People who are interested in the agency's services may become involved in numerous activities or they may stop by to talk with others who are working toward their own recovery. Agency services are viewed as an adjunct to traditional medical treatment for cancer, not as an alternative, and the community is supportive of traditional medical approaches. However, people who choose not to be under the care of a physician are also welcome.
