Health/Disability Related Counseling

Provider: CANCER SUPPORT COMMUNITY - VALLEY - VENTURA - SANTA BARBARA

The agency provides supportive services for adults 21 years and older, who have cancer and their families, friends, significant others and their school-age children. Services include health problems counseling, health education on cancer-related issues, and wellness programs. There are no geographic restrictions.

The program focuses on assisting participants to deal with the fear, loneliness and physical and emotional problems they may be experiencing. Ongoing groups for specific types of cancer focus on areas like stress management and pain control, visualization and relaxation, or nutrition and cooking.

Crisis-oriented, short term individual or family counseling is also available if a specific need arises; short-term counseling is sometimes provided for participants of ongoing groups.

In addition to group meetings and counseling, the community provides various educational programs which are open to anyone who has cancer and his or her significant others. Workshops on topics like exercise, biofeedback and journal writing are held regularly; discussions with health care specialists are scheduled periodically; and social/recreational activities are frequently offered.

A library is also available for anyone who is interested which contains cancer-related books, materials about agency programs and other resources related to cancer and recovery.
