AIDS Drug Assistance Programs

The foundation provides health services for people in Los Angeles County who have AIDS or HIV-related illness. Services include AIDS/HIV control, AIDS/HIV Clinics, AIDS/HIV prevention counseling, AIDS drug assistance programs, case/care management, clinical trials, contact tracing/partner notification, contract clinic services for primary care, HIV testing for males only, and volunteer opportunities. There are no geographic restrictions.
The program provides AIDS screening; access to clinical trials; AIDS/HIV prevention counseling; case management, mental health services; nutrition services; outpatient treatment; pharmacy services; social services and benefits counseling; speakers for community education about AIDS healthcare issues; urgent care nurse, volunteer recruitment, training, and placement; and a web site for anonymous notification services to sexual partners. Services are provided at numerous locations including outpatient health care centers and hospices.
The agency health care centers are located on the campuses of major medical centers. The AHF Healthcare Centers, provide a full range of services for people who are HIV at the asymptomatic and at the symptomatic level. Services include HIV testing for males, early intervention, treatment, counseling services, and a medical group for people who have full blown AIDS. HIV testing is done by means of an oral test, and results are available within one week.
The web site, which is funded through the L A County DHS Public Health - Division of HIV and STD Programs (see the separate entry), gives residents who test positive for a sexually transmitted disease or HIV infection, an opportunity to send an anonymous e-card to their sexual partners, warning them that they have been recently exposed to an STD. The site also provides information about STD and HIV/AIDS and lists resources for testing, treatment and support.
The center enrolls patients for the AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP) and dispenses drugs from the ADAP formulary, which provides FDA-approved HIV-related drugs at little or no cost to those who are eligible; call for more information. The agency also conducts clinical trials using the latest HIV medications.
There is a women's clinic on-site at the Hollywood and Westside clinics. The Women's Clinics coordinate with Children's Hospital of Los Angeles to provide simultaneous care for children who are HIV. Confidential and anonymous free HIV testing for males is also done at two of the agency's thrift shops the Hollywood and West Hollywood Out of the Closet stores.
The volunteer program recruits adults age 18 and older, including people who have AIDS, who live in Los Angeles County. Volunteers are trained to perform a variety of jobs at the hospice, such as kitchen duties, patient care, or clerical work.
In addition to its direct services, the agency lobbies for state and federal legislation and promotes health care policies and access for people who have AIDS or HIV infection.
