Tenant Rights Information/Counseling

The organization provides information and support primarily for low income people who live in the central Los Angeles area who have tenant-landlord-related problems. Services include group advocacy on housing issues, landlord/tenant dispute resolution, lawyer referral services on housing discrimination issues, and tenant rights counseling. Services are restricted to the Greater Los Angeles area.
The agency provides advocacy to groups of tenants to unify in order to fight against substandard housing conditions, coordinates with Legal Aid on behalf of tenants, lobbies for protective legislation, and works with a city task force to enforce measures against slum landlords.
Information is available about any type of tenant-related issue including rental agreements and leases, rent increases, repairs and maintenance, and eviction. The agency provides one-on-one tenant rights counseling. The organization can also provide information and guidance about tenants' rights and responsibilities related to privacy, rent withholding, rent control, and legal evictions, and related to protection against unlawful or retaliatory evictions.
The organization can also notify offending landlords that they are not in compliance with the law.
The organization does not provide legal representation but can refer clients who need representation in court with legal aid organizations.
