Legal Associations

The State Bar of California provides services for members of the legal profession in the State of California. Services include a legal association of member attorneys, legal peer review, and a professional licensing body for attorneys allowed to practice in the state. The organization is part of the judicial branch of California government an an arm of the California Supreme Court.

As a legal association, members are provided with employment information, professional conferences, publications, business assistance, and member services including insurance.

As a peer review organization, the Bar accepts complaints against attorneys from the public. Members of the board of review investigate each complaint and correspond with the filer of the complaint when the matter is resolved.

As a licensing organization, the Bar Association accepts registration for the Bar Exam, administers the exam and grants attorneys who qualify, the right to practice law in the State of California.
