Minimum Wage/Hour Standards

The agency provides law enforcement services for individuals who live in Los Angeles County. Services include child labor laws, labor and employment laws, labor standards and practices, minimum wage/hour standards. There are no geographic restrictions.
The agency is responsible for planning and administering programs which implement federal labor legislation related to wage and hour safeguards for workers. It is also responsible for enforcing laws that relate to wages and hours. In addition, it determines prevailing wage rates for federal construction contracts and subcontracts.
The agency enforces the family medical leave act (FMLA); minimum wage laws; laws related to rates of pay for overtime worked; child labor laws; and laws which relate to employment and earnings for students, trainees, and workers who have disabilities.
The agency administers a program of registration for farm labor contractors to protect the health, safety, and welfare of migrant and seasonal agricultural workers; and enforces laws which require businesses to maintain records which relate to interstate commerce.
The department administers the wage garnishment provisions of the Consumer Credit Protection Act by limiting the amount of a person's income which can be withheld to pay a debt.
It also distributes printed material about wage and hour regulations and investigates complaints made about violations of these laws. The names of people who make complaints are confidential. The agency is empowered to impose penalties for compliance violations if the issues cannot be otherwise resolved.
