Transitional Housing/Shelter (Pregnant Women With Children, Domestic Violence Issues)

The program provides transitional shelter for victims of domestic violence and their children. Residents are expected to work and save earnings in order to obtain permanent housing. Residents are asked to save at least 50 per cent of their earnings. Single women, single men, men with children and couples without children ARE NOT eligible for service. People who have mental or emotional problems are considered on an individual basis. People who are recovering from a substance abuse problem must be clean and sober for at least six months. Residents who are accepted may stay approximately 2 years and are assisted to make and implement plans that will enable them to become self-sufficient. There are no geographic restrictions.

The shelter is located in an apartment type building that can accommodate up to 52 people. Residents are expected to take responsibility for their children; assist with daily chores; observe curfew hours; pursue employment and have the option of case management, clinical and advocacy services.

Social service advocacy, community resources, outside referrals and housing placement assistance is available to all residents. Additional services include children's counseling, groups that include budgeting, parenting education, arts and life skills.
