Discrimination Assistance

The agency provides law enforcement services regarding civil rights to individuals, including active military personnel, who live in Los Angeles County and throughout the United States. Services include discrimination assistance, consumer rights assistance for active military, and voting rights protection for active military. There are no geographic restrictions.

The agency prosecutes cases involving the violent interference with liberties and rights defined in the Constitution or federal law. The rights of both citizens and non-citizens are protected. In general, it is the use of force, threats, or intimidation that characterize a federal criminal violation of an individual's civil rights.

The types of acts that may involve violations of federal criminal civil rights laws include hate crimes, official misconduct, human trafficking, interference with access to reproductive health care, interference with the exercise of religious beliefs, and the destruction of religious property.

The agency also protects the rights of active military personnel through re-employment discrimination assistance, voting rights protection, and consumer protection.
