Food Vouchers

Provider: LOS ANGELES COUNTY AGING AND DISABILITIES DEPARTMENT - AREA AGENCY ON AGING

This office coordinates and plans services for adults 55 years and older in a variety of locations in Los Angeles County (excluding Los Angeles City) by the Workforce Development, Aging and Community Services (WDACS). Services include administrative entities, area agencies on aging, housing search and information, food vouchers for older adults (SFMNP), printed materials, senior advocacy groups, and specialized information and referral. This is primarily a planning and administrative office. Staff can also provide information and assistance for senior services. There are no geographic restrictions.

The agency administers various programs offered at senior centers and community senior service agencies. These programs may include health screening, information and referral, nutrition education and congregate and home-delivered meals, food vouchers for the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program, transportation to nutrition sites and to other destinations in the community, housing, employment, legal counseling, advocacy for government benefits and for consumer problems, will preparation, case management, in-home support and ombudsman services for seniors who are in long-term care facilities.

Coupon booklets containing food voucher checks are provided through the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP), which operates annually from May through September for older adults age 60 and older who meet federal poverty guidelines. Booklets are distributed through local senior centers and checks may be redeemed for fresh, nutritious, unprepared, locally-grown produce, cut herbs, and raw honey at certified farmers markets. Applicants may receive one booklet per season; husbands and wives may apply separately. Booklets are available until they run out.

The agency also houses the Los Angeles County Commission on Aging, an appointed senior advocacy commission which advises and coordinates public policy, programs and service delivery plans concerning older adults.

Printed materials about aging, housing for older adults and elder abuse issues are also available.
