The agency provides legal services to individuals in Los Angeles County. Services include public defender services. There are no geographic restrictions.
Public defender services are provided to individuals who are accused of public offenses, and who cannot afford to retain the services of a private attorney.
The agency also represents individuals under the age of 18 who are facing juvenile delinquency proceedings, or regarding whom the state has insistuted wardship proceedings.
The agency also represents individuals who are involuntarily detained in medical facilities in a variety of mental health proceedings due to purported mental disabilities, those as to whom conservatorship proceedings have been instituted because they are alleged to be gravely disabled, and patients whose competency to refuse medical treatment is challenged.
The agency also represents individuals who are subject to contempt proceedings for violation of court orders, such as child support and child visitation or custody orders.
The Prop 47 Call Center provides information for individuals convicted in Los Angeles County of certain felony offenses, who may qualify for a reduction to a misdemeanor under Prop 47. The felony offenses included Commercial Burglary; Certain Forgeries; Bad Checks; Grand Theft Crimes; Possession of Stolen Property; Petty Theft with Priors; and Possession of a Controlled Substance.

Application Procedure
Most clients are referred to the agency by the court when it is established that they cannot afford to obtain private legal representation. People may also call or walk in for information.

Fees
Individuals may be assessed an administrative fee of $25 based on their ability to pay. There are no fees for the Prop 47 Call Center.
