Eviction Prevention Legal Assistance
Provider: SHRIVER SELF HELP CENTER - LOS ANGELES
The project provides legal services for low income landlords and tenants in unlawful detainer-eviction cases involving housing units in Los Angeles. Services include eviction prevention assistance, legal representation, and pro bono legal aid volunteer opportunities. There are income guidelines based on Federal Poverty Guidelines, and geographic restriction to the South Los Angeles area.
The project works in conjunction with the Superior Court and several legal aid organizations to identify cases where eviction has seemingly been illegally started. Intake and assessment is done at the Eviction Assistance Center located at the Stanley Mosk Courthouse in downtown Los Angeles.
To be eligible for services in an eviction case for a housing unit, the opposing party must have an attorney listed on the Answer or Complaint AND you must be:
- low-income
- at the beginning of the eviction
- and a party to a housing eviction case filed at the Stanley Mosk Courthouse (111 N. Hill St., Los Angeles, CA 90012).
Applicants must bring with them the Summons and Complaint or Answer for the eviction case. If they've only received the court notice notifying them of an eviction case, bring that. They must also bring any notices from the landlord and supporting documents such as copies of complaints to government agencies, rent receipts, etc.
