The United States Attorney prosecutes federal crimes and represents the United States in civil litigation in the Central District of California. The office headquartered in Los Angeles serves seven counties - Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo. There are no geographic restrictions.
The office is divided into three litigating divisions (criminal, civil and tax) and an administrative division.
The Criminal Division is composed of sections that include Major Frauds, Public Corruption and Civil Rights, Environmental Crimes, Cyber and Intellectual Property Crimes, Narcotics, National Security, Violent and Organized Crime, Asset Forfeiture and General Crimes.
The Civil Division represents the United States as both plaintiff and defendant. Among other things, the Civil Division handles cases involving government fraud, medical malpractice and Constitutional tort cases and discrimination in hiring and employment practices by agencies of the United States.
The Tax Division represents the government in federal and state civil actions, suits or proceedings in which the IRS is concerned.
The department sponsors the Victim/Witness Notification program. Victims or witnesses of Federal crime who enroll in the Victim Notification System (VNS) are notified of an inmate's release, escape or furlough. The VNS has a toll-free number and an internet site. The program is conducted in collaboration with the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
