Psychiatric Mobile Response Teams

Provider: LOS ANGELES COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF MENTAL HEALTH - SAN FERNANDO MENTAL HEALTH CENTER

The clinic provides outpatient mental health services for children age five and older and adults in the San Fernando Valley who have a major psychiatric disorder and/or severe functional impairment. Services include in-person crisis intervention services, medication monitoring, mental health evaluation, outpatient mental health services, psychiatric case management, psychiatric disorder counseling, and psychiatric resocialization. The geographical area served by this office is SPA 2 which includes the cities of Agoura Hills, Burbank, Calabassas, Glendale, La Canada Flintridge, San Fernando, Santa Clarita, Val Verde, and Westlake Village.

The center also offers case management and psychosocial rehabilitation services for people who meet the same criteria but are not necessarily experiencing a psychiatric emergency. In addition, staff provide psychotherapy and counseling, case management, and supportive services at this site for adults who have been discharged from state, county, and county-contract psychiatric hospitals to help them make the transition back to the community and prevent rehospitalization.

The agency also provides an MHSA funded Wellness Center to provide services and support to mental health clients who are in recovery and no longer need intensive mental health services. The Wellness Center provides self-help mental health support groups; peer to peer support groups; social/recreational activities; medication evaluation and support services; employment and education services, and integrated services and support for co-occurring disorders, such as substance abuse.

For on-going patients, referrals are given for housing possibilities, benefit maintenance and short term or crisis mental health services.

Staff can evaluate psychiatric emergency situations by phone or on a walk-in basis. The Psychiatric Mobile Response Team (PMRT) is housed at a different site and is dispatched by the ACCESS center after-hours and on weekends. The PMRT team can be called for service in the community during service hours through the Arcadia center. The services may include short-term crisis intervention; psychiatric stabilization; involuntary hospitalization; medication monitoring; and referrals for ongoing treatment, case management, and other appropriate services.
