Mentoring Services Volunteer Opportunities
Provider: PEPPERDINE UNIVERSITY - FOSTER GRANDPARENT PROGRAM
The program provides volunteer opportunities for low-income older adults age 55 and older who live in Los Angeles County. Services include foster grandparent programs and volunteer recruitment/placement services. Volunteer opportunities include classroom aide volunteer opportunities, child care volunteer opportunities, mentoring volunteer opportunities and tutoring volunteer opportunities. The agency partners with schools and community agencies in SPA's 6 and 8; volunteer opportunities are available at sites in Carson, Compton, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Torrance and Watts. There are no geographic restrictions.
Foster Grandparents work in designated volunteer stations in schools, child day care centers, head start classes and after school clubs which provide service for children who have special needs or circumstances. They serve as mentors, tutors and supporters of at-risk children with special needs.
Foster Grandparent volunteers are 55 years of age or older; must be in good health; must meet current income eligibility requirements; meet all FBI and State background requirements; complete an application; and attend a new volunteer orientation prior to placement in a volunteer station.
Foster Grandparents receive a non-taxable hourly stipend, transportation reimbursement, and monthly specialized training. They volunteer 15 to 40 hours each week, work one-on-one or in small groups under the supervision of trained professional staff, and form friendships with other volunteers.
