Domestic Violence Shelters (Abused Lesbians/Gay Individuals)

The program provides shelter for victims/survivors of domestic violence and their children. Children of any age are accepted. Services include domestic violence shelters and transitional housing/shelter. For the 30 day emergency domestic violence shelter services, adults may not continue working while they are at the shelter but there children will attend a local school. For the 6 month transitional shelter (which can be accessed only after completing the stay in the domestic violence shelter) adults may work and children can attend public school. There are no geographic restrictions.

The shelters accepts victims/survivors of domestic violence who have been abused by a spouse, boyfriend, girlfriend, by a heterosexual or gay partner, by a parent or by an adult child. Single men, single women and pregnant women are accepted. People with disabilities, including people who use wheelchairs, can be accommodated if they are ambulatory and able to care for themselves. Applicants who have cars will be accepted into the program when additional staff is available to escort them to the shelter and during daytime hours only. Service is targeted, but not restricted, to residents of the Southeast area of Los Angles County; people fleeing a batterer from outside Southern California are considered on a case-by-case basis.

Support services include TRO assistance, welfare advocacy, information and referral, and individual and group counseling. Residents are assisted with obtaining housing and financial assistance. Residents are also expected to assist with daily chores and to observe shelter rules and curfew. The shelter provides linen, clothing and all meals, as needed.

Application Procedure
Call hotline for to inquire about the emergency shelter. A referral from another agency is required for the transitional shelter. Referring agencies call the shelter to verify space availability and to conference the caller with the intake worker. ID is preferred, but not required.
Fees
There are no fees for service. At the transitional shelter, residents are required to have a source of income, must pay a security deposit upon entrance (which is returned upon exit minus costs for repairs to their apartment), and each resident is placed on a budget that requires saving 50% of their income each month. The client's savings is issued to him/her upon exiting the program.
