Family Law
Provider: HARRIETT BUHAI CENTER FOR FAMILY LAW
The Harriett Buhai Center for Family Law is operational on a remote basis during the Coronavirus emergency. Low-income individuals seeking domestic violence and family law assistance can call (213) 388-7515 and leave a message with a safe contact phone number.
Legal assessment, advice and ongoing services will continue to be provided within the constraints caused by the Public Health emergency and shelter in place orders.
The center provides legal services for low-income people of all ages in Los Angeles County, including those who are undocumented. Services include child custody/visitation assistance, child support assistance, divorce assistance, legal counseling and paternity suits. No children are allowed at the agency. Income restrictions apply for some services. Applicants must be Los Angeles Metro residents and the case must be filed in a Los Angeles County Courthouse. There are no geographic restrictions.
Staff and volunteers help individuals prepare to represent themselves in court through legal advice, counseling and forms assistance.
A pro bono panel of attorneys may be able to provide legal representation for qualified individuals who cannot represent themselves. This attorney representation is provided on a case by case basis, and at the discretion on the Supervising Attorneys. A limited number of pro bono hours are available each year; service may not be available at certain times throughout the year, and it is not available to everyone.
