Anger Management (Youth)

The agency provides family life education for adults and youth who live in Los Angeles County. Services include anger management, bereavement counseling, parenting skills classes, spouse/domestic partner abuse counseling and prevention, and youth counseling for substance abusers. Classes are court accepted. Age restrictions apply for some services; there are no geographic restrictions.

Anger management classes are 26 weeks and provide information on how to handle issues related to anger and the skills to deal with adverse or negative situations. Topics covered may include dealing with stress, what is anger, communication skills, and defusing anger techniques.

Bereavement counseling can be individual or in a group setting and it is an 8 week program. Domestic violence classes are 26 to 52 weeks and provide information on such topics as defining the batterer, how domestic violence affects the family, communication skills, the consequences of violent behavior, the cycle of violence, and appropriate ways to discipline.

Parenting classes are 12 to 26 weeks and provide information on how to be an effective and responsible parent. Topics covered may include communication skills, patience, child safety, healthy environment, stress and self esteem.

Youth counseling is available for individuals ages 12 to 18 who have a pre-existing issue with alcohol or drugs. The program requires participants to attend a minimum of 9 hours per week and includes group and individual counseling, social activities and emotional support. Youth receive dinner and have time to complete homework independently.

Progress reports and a certificate of completion are provided for court ordered individuals as needed.

Fees

Most fees are on a sliding scale ranging from $10 to $16 per class; there is also an enrollment fee of $20. There are no fees for the youth counseling program.
