Group Counseling

Provider: LOS ANGELES COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF MENTAL HEALTH - DOWNTOWN MENTAL HEALTH CENTER

The project provides mental health services primarily for homeless, chronically mentally ill adults, age 18 and older, who live in the Skid Row area and surrounding areas of downtown Los Angeles.

Services include assessment and evaluation; assessment for involuntary hospitalization; assessment and certification for SSI; case management; crisis intervention and short-term supportive individual treatment; group counseling; information and referral to mental health-related community resources; medication monitoring; money management counseling; and outreach consultation and education for other service providers. The project acts as a liaison for other agencies in the area and the county mental health system.

Mental health evaluation is done with clients who meet the eligibility requirements and are seeking ongoing treatment at the center. The center does not provide court-ordered mental health evaluation.

The agency also provides an MHSA funded Wellness Center to provide services and support to mental health clients who are in recovery and no longer need intensive mental health services. The Wellness Center provides self-help mental health support groups; peer to peer support groups; social/recreational activities; medication evaluation and support services; employment and education services, and integrated services and support for co-occurring disorders, such as substance abuse.

In addition the centers provide physical health screenings, and assistance with referrals to health care providers. The program also provides healthy living and health management education. Referrals are given for, housing possibilities, benefit maintenance and short term or crisis mental health services.

The centralized PMRT program provides limited, mobile, on-site, in-person evaluation, crisis intervention, and involuntary hospitalization when necessary for people who are in the areas served by the Asian/Pacific Counseling and Treatment Center and the Hollywood, Northeast, Roybal, and Skid Row offices of the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health. This mobile program is for people who are experiencing a psychiatric emergency who are unable or unwilling to seek services elsewhere.

The Veterans And Loved Ones Recovery (VALOR) program provides veteran reintegration counseling and support for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Military Sexual Trauma (MST) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) for veterans and their immediate families and dependents.
