Recreational Activities/Sports

Provider: ABILITYFIRST - LONG BEACH

The center provides services for people with disabilities with a variety of recreational programs and supportive services for children, teens and young adults ages 3 to 22 who have physical and/or developmental disabilities and who live in the greater Long Beach area. Services include an adult day program, aquatic exercise, day camps, and recreational activities/sports. The center does not provide transportation services; however, people who are sponsored by Regional Center may receive transportation services from that agency. There are no geographic restrictions.

The after school and summer day camp programs provide activities including swimming, cooking, sports, open recreation, arts and crafts, special events, and field trips. The programs operate in conjunction with the Long Beach Unified School District calendar; youth attend the center-based program all day, most days, when public school is not in session and after school dismissal on the days classes are held. Youth may attend on a full time or part time basis, two to five days per week.

Specialized programs for teens and adults include activities like excursions to movies, restaurants, and sporting events; dances; and parties. A calendar of scheduled events is available.

The adult development center provides independent living skills training and socialization experiences for people age 18 and older who are not enrolled in school or in a vocational training program. Adults attend two to five days per week to develop skills in areas like grooming, cooking, communication and money management and to participate in community awareness activities, crafts, field trips and swimming. The amount of time a person spends in the program depends upon individual need.

In addition, the center provides a variety of aquatic programs designed primarily for adults recovering from injury or illness and people who have arthritic conditions. A shallow, heated pool with a sliding dome roof is located on-site. Warm water swim exercise programs include an open swim five days per week and specially designed classes for people with arthritis or related conditions.
