Dog Guides

Provider: SEEING EYE INC, THE

The agency provides services for people who are visually impaired or blind age 16 and older in the United States and Canada. Services include dog guides. Staff provide in-residence training for active blind people who want to increase their independence and mobility through a Seeing Eye dog. People who qualify stay at the facility for 27 days to learn about the proper care and use of a dog guide and to develop a relationship with the dog that will be theirs; students who apply for replacement dogs stay 20 days. The dogs are provided by the Seeing Eye Breeding Program. Age restrictions apply; there are no geographic restrictions.

To be eligible, applicants must be active people who will use the skills the dog has acquired, have medical verification of physical fitness and hearing, able to understand and apply the guidelines for care and use of a Seeing Eye dog, and have a vision level that is too restrictive to be effective in travel.
