The program provides legal services for California legal services advocates who deal with CalWORKS, CalFresh, GAIN and Medi-Cal advocates and recipients. Services include advocacy, publications, representation, technical assistance, welfare rights assistance and training. There are no geographic restrictions.
The program advocates on behalf of individuals and at legislative and system levels. It co-sponsors state legislation and maintains current information about the status of pending or recently-enacted state and federal legislation and regulations.
Welfare rights assistance services for the legal services programs include consultation about specific case questions and general benefits problems; fair hearing representation for clients they refer to the program; statistical analysis of CalWORKS, CalFresh, GAIN and Medi-Cal programs, co-counseling on major litigation; updates regarding the status of pending state regulation; and other requests.
The organization publishes a state-wide directory of welfare advocates, public assistance tables (which include eligibility criteria and grant amounts) and a newsletter.
