Maternity Homes
Provider: PRECIOUS LIFE SHELTER
The program provides a maternity home for homeless pregnant women 18 years and older. Services include emergency and transitional shelter for pregnant women. Participants are allowed to remain in the shelter until their child is two years old.There are no geographic restrictions.
The maximum capacity of the emergency shelter service is for 6 women. While in the short-term program, residents are required to seek permanent housing and employment. Residents are provided with case management and referrals to other social service agencies.
Residents may apply to the agency's Transitional Living Program. Residents provide their own meals, share in the responsibilities of the house work, and focus on learning life skills for independent living. Residents may remain in the program for two to three months after childbirth. Residents may also apply for the Single Parent Efficiency (SPE) Program. Participants are allowed to remain in the shelter for up to twenty-four months after childbirth. The program requires participation in job training, participation in education, or working full time. Residents receives low-cost housing and is counseled in money management skills. The resident sets money aside for a move to permanent housing. Support services include baby care, breast feeding, budget management skills, child abuse prevention, dental care, domestic violence prevention, finance education, Lamaze, labor and delivery training, nutrition education, parenting skills, self-esteem counseling and STD education.
