Early Head Start

The school district is a grantee agency for the Head Start and Early Head Start programs, which provide free child development programs for low-income children. The agency administers 21 Head Start sites, one Early Head Start site, one site that provides both programs, and one site that offers an enhanced head start program. Age and geographic restrictions apply.
The Head Start program serves families whose children are 3 and 4 years old with priority given to children who will be 4 years old and attending kindergarten during the following school year; or children ages 3 through 5 who have disabilities. Services are available full day and part-day, as well as home-based. The Early Head Start Program serves pregnant women, infants and toddlers, ages 6 weeks to 3 years through center-based and home-based models.
The Educare Los Angeles at Long Beach program provides enhanced head start services for families with children who will be 3 or 4 years old by Sept. 1 of the following school year. The program has smaller class sizes and offers a Spanish/English dual language program, more intensive family support services and family activities to program participants.
