Medicaid Applications

This program provides medical benefits coverage for qualified California residents (it is known as Medicaid in other states). Medi-Cal pays for a variety of medical services for children and adults with limited income and resources.

People can apply for Medi-Cal benefits regardless of sex, race, religion, color, national origin, sexual orientation, marital status, age, disability or veteran status. For questions related to immigration status, please visit Medi-Cal Coverage for All.

MEDI-CAL ELIGIBILITY

Eligible low-income applicants who meet income and household eligibility requirements may include the following people:

  • 65 or older
  • Blind
  • Disabled
  • Under 21
  • Pregnant
  • In a skilled nursing or intermediate care home
  • On refugee status for a limited time, depending how long you have been in the United States
  • A parent or caretaker relative of an age eligible child
  • Have been screened for breast and/or cervical cancer (Breast and Cervical Cancer Treatment Program)

People who are enrolled in one of the following programs can also receive Medi-Cal:

  • CalFresh
  • SSI/SSP
  • CalWorks (AFDC)
  • Refugee Assistance
  • Foster Care or Adoption Assistance Program

Application Procedure

Apply online at www.dpss.lacounty.gov. As part of the process applicants must provide identification and proof of income eligibility. Individuals in need of special accommodations should contact the Customer Service Center for options. Services are also available in person at local offices.

  Most applications are processed within 30 days; long term care applications must be processed within 45 days unless there are extenuating circumstances. Emergency Medi-Cal cards may be issued if the need is urgent and aid is approved.

Fees
In most cases there is no cost for Medi-Cal coverage. Depending on eligibility and income requirements some families may have a minimal monthly premium.
