Legal Counseling

The center provides services for older adults age 55 and older, and their families who live or work in the city of West Hollywood. Services include aging/older adult support groups, bereavement counseling, blood pressure screening, case/care management, conjoint counseling, family counseling, friendly telephoning, individual counseling, in person crisis intervention, legal counseling, recreational activities/sports, specialized information and referral, senior centers, and telephone reassurance. There are age and geographic restrictions for services.

Counseling may focus on a variety of issues which relate to aging and the adjustments that are necessary for the senior and the family. In addition, workshops are provided which focus on issues like bereavement, retirement, memory, and relating to an aging parent. Staff can also intervene and assist seniors and their significant others in crisis situations.

Case management is provided as a part of the Supportive Services Program (SSP) and West Hollywood Senior Program which assist frail older adults age 55 and older to stay in their homes as long as appropriately possible. Staff can assess the needs of frail seniors, work with them and their families to develop plans and to obtain services, coordinate and monitor the provision of needed services, and make home visits. In addition, the center offers the Telecheck program which provides daily phone calls to isolated seniors to reduce their isolation and to ensure their safety.

The center offers regular blood pressure screening and occasional health lectures. It also provides weekly exercise classes in folk dance, Tai Chi, and Yoga; weekly meetings for Bridge, Scrabble, and Life History Writing. Conversation Cafes are offered weekly to bridge the English and Russian speaking communities. Staff can also connect seniors with additional services which are provided at the Freda Mohr Multiservice Center.

The area served is ethnically diverse and includes many Russian as well as non-Russian-speaking seniors and LGBTQ seniors. The center provides the full range of services for anyone in the catchment area.
