Adult Residential Facility Licensing

Provider: CALIFORNIA STATE DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES - COMMUNITY CARE LICENSING - WOODLAND HILLS ADULT AND SENIOR CARE REGIONAL OFFICE

The division licenses, monitors and inspects non-medical community care facilities. Facilities include adult day care centers, child day care centers, preschools, family child care homes, foster homes and group homes for children, and residential care facilities for adults and the elderly. The division also provides information on obtaining State licensing for adult foster care, an individual residential living option for the elderly. This division serves Los Angeles County. The office in Woodland Hills licenses older adult facilities only.

The division responds to and investigates complaints from the public about these facilities and provides orientation sessions for those interested in obtaining a license. Licenses are required for child and adult care, and are renewed annually. All facilities, including family day care homes, foster care for children facilities and residential care facilities must also obtain a fire safety clearance.

Providing child care without a license is a misdemeanor and may be subject to a $200 per day fine. Visit the agency's website for full details about licensing requirements, including what types of programs may be exempt.
