Adolescent/Youth Counseling

The agency provides counseling services for individuals in Los Angeles County. Services include adolescent/youth counseling, bereavement counseling, bereavement support groups, divorce counseling, family counseling, marriage counseling, mental health related support groups, parent counseling, parenting skills classes, premarital counseling, sexual assault/incest support groups, and substance use disorder counseling. Counseling services are restricted to La Mirada residents. There are no geographic restrictions for support group services.

The focus of the sessions may be on problems and stresses of living, such as parenting, parent-child conflict, family communication, marital problems, divorce, stepfamily adjustments, school problems, adjustments of childhood or adolescence, retirement, grief and bereavement; pre-marital issues; on a specific crisis; or on alcohol or drug use, especially by adolescents.

Staff meet with the client(s) to assess the problems and to develop a treatment plan which may utilize several counseling modalities. Staff can also refer people who are not appropriate for clinic services or who can benefit from additional support to other community resources.

The support groups offered by the agency form in response to client interest and need.

A teen support group is available which assists adolescents to develop positive self-esteem, responsibility, and decision-making skills which enable them to deal with peer pressure and to make mature decisions.

Parenting skills classes are offered to help parents find more effective and supportive ways of dealing with discipline.

Other groups are offered, as needed, that focus on areas like assertiveness, grief, incest survivors and general support.
