The center provides a variety of services for adults, age 55 and older, who live in Whittier and the surrounding areas. Services include congregate and home-delivered meals; classes; recreational and social activities; legal and tax assistance; information about Medicare, supplemental health insurance and health maintenance organizations; health screening services including blood pressure checks, glaucoma tests and flu shots. The center houses the city's information and referral program which provides services for people of all ages.
The center hosts a nutrition program for adults 60 years and older which serves low-cost hot lunches at the center during the week, a home delivered meal program, nutrition education classes, speakers and entertainment. See the SASSFA Senior Nutrition Program entry for details.
The center offers numerous classes and recreational opportunities, including parties, dances and other social events, pool tables and a senior citizen fitness walking course. It sells Whittier Dial-A-Ride cards and MTA identification cards to Whittier residents; this service is available on the 25th through the 10th of the month only. A free monthly newsletter is available at the center which gives information about current classes, services and activities.
There are volunteer opportunities at the center for people who are interested in assisting in center programs, including the nutrition program. People who utilize the center are encouraged to become members although membership is not required for participation.
