Family Literacy Programs

Provider: CITY OF BURBANK PUBLIC LIBRARY - BURBANK CENTRAL LIBRARY

The agency provides library services for residents of the City of Burbank. Services include adult literacy programs, family literacy programs, home library services, library services, meeting space, and recordings for the blind and dyslexic. The library maintains a collection of books, magazines, videos, music cassettes, DVDs, books on tape and other materials that are available for use in the library or on a loan basis. Staff can also provide reference information and research assistance and an orientation to using the library, and can arrange for visits by school classes. The library also offers internet service during the library's open hours. There are no geographic restrictions.

The specialized library programs include the talking book program that makes materials housed at the Braille Institute available to people who are blind or have visual impairments. The library also offers a home borrower's service which delivers reading material to people who are unable to come to the library.

The library has an adult and family literacy program. The adult literacy program is for adults 18 years and older, who speak and understand English but read and write below an 8th grade level. The program matches an adult learner with a volunteer tutor to meet one-on-one weekly for a minimum of 6 months.
