Health/Disability Related Support Groups
Provider: CANCER SUPPORT COMMUNITY - LOS ANGELES
The agency provides supportive services for individuals who have cancer and their families, friends and significant others. Services include bereavement support groups, health related support groups and wellness-related events. There are no geographic restrictions.
Support groups are led by licensed psychotherapists. Some support groups are drop-in while others require attendance to an orientation session and conducting a short interview. Diagnosis-specific groups include brain tumor, Stage 1 & 2 breast cancer, Stage 3 & 4 breast cancer, breast cancer post-treatment, blood cancer, pancreatic and prostate cancer groups. Topic-specific groups include expressive writing, bereavement, young adults with cancer, mixed diagnoses and a long-term survivorship group.
The agency also provides services at offsite locations including California Hospital Medical Center, White Memorial Medical Center, Los Angeles LGBT Center, Tower Oncology Hematology, Clover Park and Roxbury Park. The offsite locations help those who cannot travel to the West Los Angeles facility gain access to the cancer support services throughout the Greater Los Angeles area. Spanish support groups for Spanish speaking individuals with cancer and their loved ones are available.
In addition to group meetings, the community provides various educational workshops, mind-body and exercise classes and social programs which are all open to anyone who has cancer and his or her significant others.
People who are interested in the agency's services may become involved in numerous activities or they may stop by to talk with others who are working toward their own recovery. Agency services are viewed as an adjunct to traditional medical treatment for cancer, not as an alternative, and the community is supportive of traditional medical approaches. However, people who choose not to be under the care of a physician are also welcome.
