The department provides a variety of recreational programs at several different locations for people of all ages who live in South Gate and neighboring communities. Services include recreational activities, recreational/leisure activities, athletic programs, recreational equipment and social clubs for seniors.

Circle Park, provides basketball and volleyball courts, playground equipment, and a softball diamond.

Hollydale Community Park offers play equipment, limited picnic facilities, volleyball and basketball courts, and a lighted softball diamond. The Hollydale Community Building is located at the park.

Hollydale Regional Park provides basketball, volleyball, handball, and tennis courts; a horse arena; soccer fields; playground and softball diamonds.

South Gate Nine Hole Golf Course, is open to both residents and non-residents of any age; children younger than age 10 must be accompanied by an adult.

South Gate Park has ten baseball diamonds (nine lighted), six tennis courts, horseshoe pits, a skate park, Jr. Hockey rink, a volleyball court, basketball and handball courts. The park also offers twenty acres of picnic grounds with tables, and a cookhouse, as well as the Municipal Auditorium and Girls' Clubhouse which are available for rental.

The South Gate Sports Center, offers extensive sports facilities which include an indoor swimming pool, jacuzzi, gymnasium, weight room, game room, women's sauna, a concession stand, handball and racquetball courts. The headquarters for the Junior Athletic Association is located here. Annual membership cards are available. Members do not pay daily admission fees. The center also offers sports fundamentals, adult leagues, swim team and classes for youth, adults, and people who have disabilities.

Stanford Avenue Park, provides playground equipment.

The department also maintains a "tot lot" which is equipped with playground apparatus that is safe for toddlers.

In addition to the facilities described above, the department offers numerous classes and activities at various locations. Those for children age 3 to 17 average approximately ten weeks in length, drill team, toddler activity time, tumbling, tennis, and day trips. Group and league sports for children vary with the season and include soccer, softball, baseball, and basketball. South Gate Park holds a summer day camp for children age 7 to 14. Adults age 18 and older may enroll in aerobics, cake decorating, crafts, dog obedience training, flower arranging, tennis, dance and karate classes. Adult group sports and leagues including slo-pitch, basketball and volleyball are available. The department also sponsors special events such as the July 4th fireworks; the Azalea Festival; and day trips to dinner theaters, local festivals, and museums.

South Gate residents age 55 or older may participate in activities at the Senior Center. A congregate meal is available on weekdays for seniors 60 years and older. The Senior Citizens Clubhouse holds a business meeting for all members on the first alternating Friday of each month. Seniors may participate in bingo, crafts, cards, potlucks, daytrips, and overnight excursions to places like Las Vegas and Laughlin. Members can obtain the monthly bulletin of activities at the clubhouse. The activities are not limited to residents of South Gate.
