Vocational Education

The adult school provides educational services for Downey area residents age 18 and older. Services include adult basic education, adult high school diploma courses, citizenship education, computer classes, English as a Second Language, GED test instruction, GED test sites, leisure instruction, literacy instruction, vocational education and special classes for older adults and people who have disabilities.
People who are working toward a diploma may take preparation courses and GED instruction. GED testing is offered year-round.
Vocational education courses provide a wide range of vocational programs in fields like court reporting, medical assistant and vocational nursing, pharmacy technician, dental/orthodontic assisting, phlebotomy, medical billing and coding, massage therapy, paralegal, emergency medical technician (EMT) and makeup academy. Programs for older adults include arts, sewing skills, chocolate making, floristry, painting, jewelry making, and physical conditioning; and a wide range of community education classes like makeup clinics, notary public, loan signing, real estate principles, Zumba, and yoga.
English as a Second Language classes are provided at beginning, intermediate and advanced levels. Child care services are available for individuals enrolled in ESL classes. Citizenship classes are also provided for people preparing for the Citizenship test. There are no geographic restrictions for ESL and Citizenship classes and services.
