Adolescent Psychiatric Inpatient Units

Provider: L A DOWNTOWN MEDICAL CENTER - INGLESIDE CAMPUS

The hospital provides mental health services for adults, age 18 to older, in Los Angeles County. Services include community education, in-person crisis intervention, day treatment, inpatient psychiatric treatment, outpatient services, and a partial hospitalization program. There are no geographic restrictions.

The adult inpatient program provides intensive care units, and a day treatment option for adults age 18 and older who have acute emotional or psychological problems which require a hospital setting.

Crisis intervention is provided through the hospital's Psychiatric Emergency Response Team. Staff can assess the individual, refer the patient to an appropriate service or arrange for evaluation and hospitalization in a psychiatric emergency situation. If a client is of danger to his/her self or others, the team clinician is called upon to write a 5150 hold which effects a 72 hour placement. This is not a talkline or a walk-in counseling resource; staff do not provide counseling except to deal with emergency situations.

The Partial Hospitalization Program is a step down program from the inpatient unit for those who require extra support and education about their illness. It is voluntary and funded by Medicare. Meals and snacks are provided as well as transportation. The program provides day treatment for adults age 18 and older who can utilize a structured treatment setting during the day as an alternative to psychiatric hospitalization, or who are making a transition from hospital to community living. The program does not accept individuals who have a primary substance abuse diagnosis, are severely developmentally disabled or are suicidal. Individuals may attend the program from one to five days per week for up to six hours per day. The length of treatment varies, but is usually from one to three months.

The hospital offers speakers who can talk with community groups about a wide range of mental health-related topics. In addition, staff are available to consult with other caregivers in the community.

The hospital also offers a variety of continuing education programs and seminars for mental health professionals in the community.
