Specialized Information and Referral

The agency provides education services to individuals living in Los Angeles County and statewide. Services include occupational/professional licensing for teachers; special educational services for children with developmental disabilities including specialized information and referral, technical assistance specializations, and issue advocacy, and school complaints. There are no geographic restrictions.

Information on occupational/professional licensing for teachers (credential information) is available through the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. Information includes on-line renewal information, on-line credential search and application status, credential requirements, requirements for out-of-state prepared applicants, examination information, how to apply, and other resources. Information is also available on programs that prepare teachers, counselors, site administrators, school psychologists, school social workers, school nurses, and child welfare and attendance services personnel.   

Information and referral about special education and state special schools, laws affecting the education of children with developmental disabilities and special needs, and supportive services is provided online and by telephone. The department also advocates about the education of children with developmental disabilities and special needs.

School complaints must be written and signed and allege a violation of a federal or state law or regulation, which may include an allegation of unlawful discrimination. Individuals may file complaints regarding public schools. Private school complaints must be filed with the Bureau for Private Post Secondary and Vocational Education. There are special forms for various types of complaints; see the Department website at http://www.cde.ca.gov/re/di/fq/#Complaints Complaints against teachers, principals, curriculum policies are made at the local School District level only.
