Subject Specific Public Awareness/Education

Provider: TRANSFORMING FAMILY

The agency provides family support services for families and friends of transgender individuals in Los Angeles County. Services include gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender support groups and subject specific public awareness/education about transgender issues. There are no geographic restrictions.

Specific support groups are available for families/caregivers age 18 and older, adolescents and young adults ages 13 through 24, children ages 10 through 13, and siblings ages 13 through 24. Groups meet monthly at a confidential location.

A special elementary play group is also available for children ages five through 11. The group is supervised in a playground setting, with arts and crafts projects and snacks. The group is set up to allow gender non-conforming and transgender children explore and play freely with each other; the group does not explicitly discuss gender issues.

The agency also provides public awareness and education on a variety of transgender-related issues. It works closely with the Los Angeles Unified School District as they implement a range of age-appropriate curricula. It also helps coordinate gender diversity parent education workshops for schools and community organizations.
