Mobility Assistance Service Animals
Provider: CANINE COMPANIONS FOR INDEPENDENCE
The program trains specially bred dogs to provide assistance for people who have physical/developmental disabilities. This is the Southwest Region facility, which serves the states of Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Hawaii, New Mexico, Southern California, Southern Nevada, and Utah. There are no geographic restrictions for services.
People who have been selected for the program attend an intensive 2-week training course, Team Training, where they are taught to work with a dog and to assume responsibility for its care, feeding, housing, and medical needs.
The organization actively recruits volunteers to help with light maintenance, office work, canine care, puppy raising and socializing, and special events. People who want to become puppy-raisers must participate in obedience classes and make a 15-month commitment.
