Citizenship and Immigration Services Fingerprinting

The service administers and enforces federal statutes, regulations and executive orders which relate to immigration to the United States and naturalization procedures. The Los Angeles District includes Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties. There are no geographic restrictions.

The service accepts applications for immigration, naturalization and international adoption; assists businesses with employer-related immigration matters; operates detention centers; accepts and investigates reports of immigration act violations; and provides information about immigration issues.

To replace naturalization or citizenship documents, individuals must complete Form N-565. The form can be downloaded from the agency website.

The application support centers (ASC) provide fingerprints for applicants of naturalization and other immigration benefits. Petitioners for other immigrant benefits may have their fingerprints taken by a registered law enforcement agency or an ASC. Certain law enforcement agencies that have registered with INS can also provide fingerprinting services for immigrant benefits other than naturalization.

The service's Office of Internal Audit accepts and investigates complaints of misconduct by INS employees.

The service operates centers where people are detained while awaiting an immigration hearing, pending an appeal with the Board of Immigration Appeals or awaiting deportation from the United States.

Citizenship and immigration medical examinations may be required depending on the immigration benefit sought. The immigration medical exam must be conducted by a physician approved by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) also known as a civil surgeon.

The service provides information about immigration and naturalization to the public via information lines, printed materials and the Internet. It also provide speakers to make presentations to businesses and community groups regarding immigration issues.
