The department plans, operates and maintains county parks and recreation areas which include wilderness areas in Los Angeles County. Services include wildlife refuges, hiking and nature centers/walks. There are no geographic restrictions.

The wildlife sanctuary is a protected area of land created for wildlife and native plants to thrive in their natural habitat.
