Special Olympics

Provider: WAYFINDER FAMILY SERVICES

The agency provides recreational programs for blind and visually impaired youth, ages 11 through 17. Services include a Special Olympics event and training, and youth enrichment programs for adolescents. Progams are restricted to youth in Los Angeles County.

The Visions Adventures in Learning Program provides challenging experiences that involve risk-taking in a safe environment; activities include outdoor sports such as rock climbing, hang gliding, white-water rafting, kayaking and skiing. Adventures in Learning events take place throughout the year in different California locations. Staff are well trained in making the unique adventures safe for the visually impaired participants. Some adventures are restricted by age range, such as a rock climb/zip line experience trip for High School age youth.

The agency also holds the annual Junior Blind Olympics, a weekend-long event with Olympic-style competitions for visually impaired youth, ages 5 to 19.
