Physical Fitness

Provider: VALLEY INTERCOMMUNITY COUNCIL - BERNARDI MULTIPURPOSE CENTER

The center provides services for older adults age 60 and older who live in the central San Fernando Valley. Services include case/care management, congregate meals/nutrition site, home delivered meals, nutrition education, physical fitness and senior centers. There are geographic restrictions for some services.

The center provides information about and referral to resources that are particularly relevant for seniors; advocacy to assist seniors to obtain benefits to which they are entitled; help with tax forms; podiatry services; educational classes and programs; recreational, social, and volunteer opportunities; nutrition programs; escort services; case management services; and a newsletter. People may come to the center to meet and spend time with other people, to participate in activities, and/or to request specific services. The center provides information and referral for community services and a variety of volunteer opportunities.

Legal assistance is offered at the center through the San Fernando Valley Bar Association and seniors who have all types of legal concerns can request a consultation appointment with an attorney.

People may also attend educational classes and programs which may include language instruction, nutrition and health education, stress reduction, and physical fitness; may participate in a variety of recreational, social, and holiday activities; and may patronize a thrift shop for seniors. Escort transportation is also available by reservation for medical or dental appointments and shopping.

The center provides both congregate and home-delivered meal programs for seniors. A hot lunch is served at the center; frail elderly people who are unable to shop or cook for themselves can request grocery shopping service and/or home-delivered meals. (See the separate entry, San Fernando Valley Interfaith Council Nutrition Program for details).

In addition, case management services are provided for frail elderly seniors who need support services to enable them to continue to live independently and to prevent or delay unnecessary institutionalization. When case management is requested a caseworker visits the senior at home, develops an individualized case plan, and arranges for needed services like transportation, telephone reassurance, in-home support, adult day care and/or counseling. The case plan is monitored and evaluated regularly and services may be provided on a short or long-term basis.

The center's newsletter is published monthly and includes information about current classes, activities, and services.
