The institute conducts research and offers educational and community service programs about industrial relations-related issues which affect labor, management, government, or the public. The institute's research findings are disseminated through publications, conferences, seminars, and special summer programs; community service programs are offered by specialized centers within the institute.

The direct services provided for organizations include programs for unions and employee associations which focus on labor related issues including collective bargaining, workplace conditions, and occupational health and safety. The Publications Center publishes and sells industrial relations-related materials including research monographs and items concerning current workplace issues and policy and practice.
