Public Speaking Volunteer Opportunities

The agency provides volunteer opportunities to individuals living in Los Angeles County. Services are targeted, but not restricted, to residents of Long Beach. Services include clerical volunteer opportunities, crisis intervention volunteer opportunities and public speaking volunteer opportunities. There are no geographic restrictions.

Clerical volunteers provide general office support including working as receptionist.

Crisis intervention volunteers take calls on the agency's domestic violence hotline.

Public speaking volunteers staff the agency's booth at various health fairs and community events.

The agency provides training to volunteers. Volunteers who wish to work on the agency hotline must complete 40 hours of state mandated training. The agency provides training two to three times per year; please contact the agency for training session start dates. Training takes place on five consecutive Fridays and consists of guest speakers from the local prosecutors office, the Long Beach Police Department, as well as speakers on topics such as sexual assault, low income child support issues, counseling skills, Stockholm Syndrome, power and control issues, the spiral of violence, statistics and causes of domestic violence and sexual assault and battery, shelter information, crisis intervention, batterers, and gay/lesbian community issues. Volunteers must take tests that gauge their progress. Volunteers must pay a $200 fee for training, and must attend every training session. Once volunteers complete training, they will be certified as domestic violence counselors/advocates.

The agency does not have any eligibility requirements, however, volunteers should not have had any domestic violence issues during the preceding two years. Volunteers must complete a written application packet, submit to an interview, and background check and agree to be fingerprinted.
