The agency provides mental health services to U S military personnel and their family members affected by the wars of Afghanistan and Iraq and other post 9/11 conflicts, active duty service members, members of the national guard and reserves and veterans and their loved ones, nationwide. Services are also available for disaster victims, victims of crime and victims of abuse/battery. There are no geographic restrictions.
The agency provides an online list of mental health professionals nationwide who are donating an hour of their time each week to provide free mental health services to military personnel and their families who have been affected directly or indirectly by the current conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq; also included are Army Reserve, Army National Guard, Air National Guard and veterans. Family members include spouses, children, parents, siblings, extended family members and unmarried partners.
Give An Hour does not prescreen mental health professionals in the program but do verify that they are licensed and are in good standing in their stated profession.
The mental health professionals can provide service in such areas as alcohol/chemical dependency, anger management, anxiety, child and adolescent counseling, family counseling, grief and loss, group counseling, individual counseling, marital counseling, parent guidance, pastoral counseling, post-traumatic stress, separation/divorce counseling, sexual abuse and traumatic brain injury.
Individuals who are helped by the program can give back to their community. The agency will connect the individual with organizations in their community in need of volunteers.
The agency's website also lists additional veteran services including the Veterans Crisis Line, the national toll free Crisis Management Information and Referral Lifeline for veterans and families and the Network of Care website which has a library and service directory for veterans and service members.
