Sexual Assault Shelters

The program provides emergency and transitional shelter for women who are survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, and their children. Services include emergency domestic violence and sexual assault shelter, and transitional shelter for battered women and survivors of sexual assault. Shelter residents receive ongoing case management from in-house advocates. Services are targeted, but not restricted, to the Asian, Pacific Islander community.

The shelter accepts single women and mothers of children up to age 17 who are in immediate danger from domestic violence and/or sexual assault. It cannot accommodate women who have current substance abuse problems or suicidal or homicidal impulses. Potential shelter residents are requested to abide by communal living rules and shelter safety policies to maintain the confidentiality of the location and other clients. The screening process includes an assessment to determine where the abusive partner lives, works and frequently visits, to determine safety before confirming shelter services. The average length of stay is six weeks. There are no geographic restrictions.

The transitional shelter program accepts women who have been in emergency shelter programs for domestic violence or sexual assault. Applicants must be referred by their emergency shelter caseworker. Applicants who are monolingual Asian/Pacific Islanders or who are in need of cultural transition services may be given special consideration as applications are considered. The women must be ready to find work, attend job training, or enroll in classes. Survivors may stay up to 12 months.

Both shelter programs provide support groups, parenting classes, life skills and self-sufficiency workshops and children's services.
