Public Speaking Volunteer Opportunities

The agency provided volunteer opportunities for Los Angeles Country residents. Volunteer opportunities include career development volunteer opportunities, child care volunteer opportunities, crisis intervention volunteer opportunities, individual/group advocacy volunteer opportunities, mentoring volunteer opportunities, public speaking volunteer opportunities, reading encouragement volunteer opportunities, recreational activities volunteer opportunities, storytelling volunteer opportunities, support group facilitation volunteer opportunities, and tutoring volunteer opportunities. There are no geographic restrictions.

  Reading encouragement volunteers and storytelling volunteers promote literacy and provide important stimulus for children in agency programs. Volunteers can read stories, as well as embellish them with puppets or other visual aids. The program runs Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 7:00pm and volunteers are asked to commit two hours per week. The agency seeks individuals who are willing to work with mothers and children. 

  Tutoring volunteers tutor children in agency programs in a variety of subjects. Tutor volunteers are matched with residents based on the child's academic need and the volunteers specific abilities. The agency seeks volunteers who have a basic understanding of the relevant subjects. 

  Crisis intervention volunteers work on the agency's 24 hour, 7 day a week crisis hotline. Crisis intervention volunteers must participate in 40 hours of agency domestic violence training, forums, conferences and workshops. Recreational activities volunteers and support group volunteers assist the agency with artistic, athletic, cultural and vocational workshops and activities. Also, support group volunteers with the appropriate education by assist with clinical activities. 

  Public speaking volunteers work in community outreach to continue to raise awareness about domestic violence and its impact on the social and economic structure of the community. Public speaking volunteers must participate in 40 hours of agency domestic violence training, forums, conferences and workshops. 

  Career volunteer volunteers, mentoring volunteers and and tutoring volunteers assist in the agency's educational/vocational program. The program is divided into several components: career interest assessment; tutorial in math, reading, spelling and writing skills; a mentor program in which women from various fields speak to clients on issues including resume writing, career choices, self esteem and budgeting. 

  Individual/group advocacy volunteers assist in the Legal Services/Legal Advocacy Program. The program educates women about their domestic situation; encourages clients to take action to better protect themselves and their children, and improve their household welfare and economic circumstances; eliminate myths, distortions and falsehoods which they may have been told by their batterers. Increase economic security and more independent living in accordance with the agency goals. The volunteer program encompasses both one time volunteers and on-going volunteers. The agency provides training. Ongoing volunteers must complete fingerprints card/child abuse index, tuberculosis test, Statement on Policy of Confidentiality, Statement Acknowledging Requirements to Report Suspected Child Abuse, and Volunteer Application/Policies and Procedures. LANGUAGES OTHER THAN ENGLISH Volunteers are not requires to speak any language other than English. The agency also seeks bilingual volunteers who can speak English and Spanish.
